Handset Detection turned 2 yesterday ! Hoooray. It was a low key affair, marked by a new release and database updates. :-)

On to the release news.

3 words – Handset, Database, Download. Thats it, in a nutshell. The complete* handset database available in one easy CSV, JSON or XML file. The CSV is 1/2 the size of the others so we added an old school option, but use whatever works for you. All the documentation is up at the resources page. The data in the download file is tied into the existing plans like thus :

Free planners get a database snapshot as of the start of the previous month, supporters get a database at the start of the current month. Bloggers, Professionals, Businesses and Enterprises get a live snapshot.

At the moment the handset database download is only available via the API.

There will be a link shortly in your Dashboards to Download the Handset Database – (login to avoid disappointment). Hit .json or .xml on that link for alternate file formats.

API improvements include /devices/information – Kae pointed out that once you’ve done a vendor and and model lookup it would be really handy to get get some actual device information via the API. Great point Kae ! So thats been rolled into this release plus bug fixes and improved device parsing for Androids.

To address performance issues with Amazon AWS we’ve taken servers outside the cloud at Server Beach and Codero.

I hope you enjoy this release.  Happy Detecting. :-)

* Note : The database download is a subset of handset properties across all handsets. Data includes screen size, os, os version, browser, browser version, vendor, model, user-agent, profile and a few other fields. This initial release targets the most popular pieces of data : screen size, browser and os information. We’re considering additional properties for the data set so let us know if you would like to see other properties in there.
